The elk (Cervus canadensis), also known as the wapiti, is one of the largest species in the Cervidae deer family and one of the largest terrestrial mammals in North America and Central and East Asia. It is often confused with the greater Alces alces, which is called moose in North America but is called elk in British English and related names in other European languages (German EIch, Swedish älg, French élan). The name “wapiti” is used in Europe for Cervus canadensis. It comes from the word waapiti in Shawnee and Cree, which means “white rump”.

Elk range in forest and forest habitat, feeding on grasses, plants, leaves, and bark. Male elk have large horns that they shed every year. Males also engage in ritualized mating behaviors during the during the rut, including posturing, antler wrestling (sparring)and bugling, a loud series of vocalizations that establishes dominance over other males and attracts females.

Although it is now native to North America and eastern Asia, it has been much more widespread in the past. Populations were found in Eurasia and Western Europe during the Late Pleistocene and survived the early Holocene in southern Sweden and the Alps. The elk has adapted well to the countries in which it was introduced, including Argentina and New Zealand. Its adaptability can actually threaten endemic species and the ecosystems into which it is introduced.

Elk are susceptible to a number of infectious diseases, some of which can be transmitted to animals. Efforts to eliminate infectious diseases from elk populations, mainly through vaccination, have been successful. Some cultures revere the elk as having spiritual significance. In parts of Asia, their horns and velvet are used in traditional medicine. Elk are hunted like a game. Their meat is weaker and has a higher protein content than beef or chicken. Elk were long been thought to belong to a subspecies of European red deer (Cervus elaphus), but evidence from many mitochondrial DNA genetic studies, begining in 1998, shows that the two species are different. Key morphological differences that distinguish C. canadensis from C. elaphus are the former’s wider rump patch and paler-hued antlers.

Elk have thick bodies, thin legs, and short tails. They have a shoulder height of 0.75-1.5 m (2 feet 6 inches – 4 feet 11 inches) with a length from nose to tail 1.6-2.7 m (5 feet 3 inches – 8 feet 10 inches). Males are older and weigh 178-497 kg (392-1,096 pounds), while females weigh 171-292 kg (377-644 pounds).

The largest of the subspecies is Roosevelt elk (C. c. roosevelti), found west of the Cascade Range in the U.S states of California, Oregon, and Washington and in the Canadian province of British Columbia. Roosevelt elk have been reintroduced to Alaska, where the largest males are estimated to weigh up to 600 kg (1300 lb).

More often, Roosevelt males weigh between 318 and 499 kg (701 to 1,100 pounds), while females weigh between 261 and 283 kg (575 to 624 pounds). The male elk weigh 204-318 kg (450-701 pounds), while the female weighs 170-191 kg (375-421 pounds).
