Groot is a fictional character that appears in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby first introduced the character in Tales to Astonish #13. (November 1960). Groot, the original extraterrestrial tree-like creature, first appeared as an invader bent on capturing humanity for experimentation.

In the crossover comic book story “Annihilation: Conquest,” the figure was reborn as a noble, heroic being in 2006. Groot later joined the Guardians of the Galaxy spin-off series, where he became a member of the same-named team. Groot has featured in a variety of Marvel-related items like animated television series, toys, and trading cards. Vin Diesel voices Groot, “child” Groot, and “teen” Groot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019), while Krystian Godlewski played the character via performance capture in the first film. Diesel will resume his role as Thor’s voice actor in Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). Baby Groot will appear in I Am Groot, a new Disney+ short-form show. In the Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout ride at Disney California Adventure, Groot is voiced by Fred Tatasciore. Diesel will resume his role as the character’s voice actor in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Groot was Diesel’s character in the 2018 Disney animated film Ralph Breaks the Internet. Since his movie and animated series appearances, Groot has been a pop-cultural sensation, with his repeated phrase “I am Groot” becoming an Internet meme.


Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby developed Groot, who first appeared in Tales to Astonish #13. (November 1960). In Dutch, “Groot” means “large,” which might refer to his stature and ability to increase in size. He returned in The Incredible Hulk Annual #5 (October 1976), among five other monsters from Marvel’s anthology horror comics from the late 1950s and early 1960s. In The Sensational Spider-Man #1, Groot appears in a nightmare of young Peter Parker (July 1997).

In 2006, Groot made an appearance in Nick Fury’s Howling Commandos, a six-issue limited series, as well as the Annihilation: Conquest and Annihilation: Conquest ” Star-Lord limited series in 2007. Groot then joined the Guardians of the Galaxy in the same-named series, where he remained a fixture until issue #25 in 2010, when the book was discontinued. Groot’s first solo series was announced in March 2015 by writer Jeff Loveness and artist Brian Kesinger.
