Nail polish (also known as nail varnish or nail enamel) is a lacquer that may be used to beautify and protect the human fingernail or toenail plates. The recipe has been tweaked several times to improve the ornamental effects and prevent cracking and peeling. Nail polish is made up of an organic polymer and a variety of additional ingredients that give it its distinctive color and feel. Nail paints are available in a variety of colors and play an important role in manicures and pedicures.

Nail polish has been around since 3000 BC in China. The ruling house of the Zhou dynasty favored the hues gold and silver around 600 BC. Red and black, on the other hand, ultimately supplanted these metallic hues as royal favorites. Nail polish was frequently produced from beeswax, egg whites, gelatin, vegetable colors, and gum arabic during the Ming dynasty.

In Egypt, the poorer classes wore light hues, while the upper classes used henna to color their nails reddish brown. Henna was frequently applied to the nails of mummified pharaohs.

It wasn’t until the 1920s that colored nail polish became popular. Basic components including lavender oil, carmine, oxide tin, and bergamot oil were used in the early nail polish formulations. It was more customary to use colored powders and creams to polish nails and then buff them until they were glossy. Graf’s Hyglo nail polish paste was one sort of polishing solution available at the time.

Types

The first coat is the base coat.

This type of nail polish is a transparent, milky-colored, or opaque pink polish that is applied to the nail prior to adding nail polish. Its goal is to strengthen nails, replenish moisture, and aid in the adhesion of lacquer to the nail. It protects the manicure from discoloration and increases its life. Some base coats are marketed as “ridge fillers,” and they help provide a smooth surface by reducing the appearance of ridges on unbuffed nails. Some base coats referred to as “peel off base coats” allow users to remove their nail polish without the need for a remover.

Topcoat

This sort of nail polish is a transparent colored polish solution that is applied to the nail after it has been painted. It hardens and protects the nail, preventing chipping, scratching, and peeling. “Quick-drying” is a term used to describe a lot of topcoats. Topcoats can also aid in the drying of the underlying colored polish. It provides the polish with a more polished and desirable appearance and may help it last longer.

Gel

Gel polish is a form of methacrylate polymer-based nail lacquer that lasts a long time. It is applied to the nail in the same way as regular nail polish. However, it does not dry. Instead, an ultraviolet lamp or UV LED is used to treat it. Gel polish may last up to two weeks with careful application and home care, but conventional nail polish formulations generally last two to seven days without peeling. It might be more difficult to remove gel polish than normal nail polish. It is generally removed by soaking the nails for five to fifteen minutes in pure acetone (the solvent used in most nail polish removers), depending on the formula.
