The nose is the most prominent feature of the human face. It is the initial organ of the respiratory system and bears the nostrils. It is also the olfactory system’s primary organ. The nasal bones and cartilages, particularly the nasal septum, which separates the nostrils and splits the nasal cavity into two, define the form of the nose. The nose of a guy is, on average bigger than that of a female.
The nasal mucosa lining the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses performs the required conditioning of breathed air by warming and moistening it, which is the nose’s primary function. Nasal conchae, shell-like bones in the cavities’ walls, play an important role in this process. Nasal hair in the nostrils filters the air, preventing big particles from entering the lungs. Sneezing is a response that occurs when undesirable particles irritate the mucosal lining of the nose. Sneezing can spread diseases because it produces aerosols, which include pathogen-carrying droplets.
Olfaction, or the sense of smell, is another important function of the nose. Specialized olfactory cells in the upper nasal cavity’s olfactory epithelium are responsible for this function.
The function of speaking is also aided by the nose. Nasal vowels and nasal consonants are created during the nasalization process. The paranasal sinuses’ hollow cavities operate as sound chambers, modifying and amplifying speech and other vocal sounds.
Many rhinoplasties, or nose plastic surgery treatments, are available to address various structural abnormalities or modify the form of the nose. Defects might be congenital, or they can develop as a result of nasal diseases or trauma. Reconstructive surgery is what these treatments are. Elective treatments that alter the contour of the nose are considered cosmetic surgery.
The bony-cartilaginous framework and internal anatomy of the nose are made up of many bones and cartilages. Skin, epithelia, mucous membrane, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels are among the soft tissue types found in the nose. Sebaceous glands are found in the skin, whereas nasal glands are found in the mucous membrane. The interior components of the nose are well protected by the bones and cartilages. The motions of the nose are controlled by a number of muscles. The configuration of the cartilages provides for flexibility in airflow management via muscle control.
The maxilla, frontal bone, and a variety of other bones make up the nose’s skeletal structure.
The nasal portion of the frontal bone, which sits between the brow ridges and terminates in a serrated nasal notch, forms the highest bony component of the nose. A left and right nasal bone connect to the nasal portion of the frontal bone on each side, and the tiny lacrimal bones and the frontal process of each maxilla on the other. The horizontal, perforated cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone serves as the internal ceiling of the nasal cavity, passing sensory fibers of the olfactory nerve through it.
